What Are the Benefits of a Sensory Processing Evaluation for Adults With ADHD?

ADHD was never just about attention.

For most of the last several decades, ADHD research and diagnostic criteria centered almost entirely on inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. Sensory experience barely entered the conversation. That's shifted substantially in the past few years. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry pooled data from 30 studies and over 5,000 participants and found that people with clinically diagnosed ADHD show significantly more atypical sensory processing patterns overall than people without ADHD (Jurek et al., 2025). Roughly a quarter of the studies in that analysis focused specifically on adults, which matters because sensory processing in ADHD has historically been studied almost exclusively in children.

A newer 2026 study went further, looking specifically at how sensory processing, ADHD symptoms, and executive functioning interact within the same adults, rather than studying them as separate, parallel traits. The researchers found that in adults with ADHD, a heightened drive toward sensation-seeking, when combined with inattentive or hyperactive symptoms, was associated with measurably worse performance on working memory and inhibitory control tasks. Interestingly, in adults without ADHD, a sensory profile leaning toward lower registration and sensory avoidance seemed to actually buffer against distractibility, functioning almost like a built-in filter. The authors concluded that effective support for adult ADHD likely needs to address sensory processing traits directly, not just core symptoms in isolation (Schulze et al., 2026).

Why does this especially matter for women?

If you're a woman who got an ADHD diagnosis in your 30s, 40s, or later — or you're wondering whether you should pursue one now — this research probably won't surprise you. It will likely explain a lot.

Women have long been underdiagnosed and later-diagnosed with ADHD, largely because diagnostic criteria were built almost entirely from research on hyperactive boys. A 2024 literature summary presented at the European Psychiatric Association congress echoes what several other researchers in this space have found: women with ADHD tend to present with more inattentive symptoms and significant emotional dysregulation rather than overt hyperactivity, which is easier for clinicians, teachers, and even the women themselves to misread as anxiety, moodiness, or simply "too sensitive" (Oroian et al., 2024). A 2025 study centering the first-hand accounts of women with late-diagnosed ADHD documented exactly this pattern: participants described years of criticism and dismissal from both their social circles and the medical professionals they turned to for help, long before anyone connected their struggles to ADHD (Holden & Kobayashi-Wood, 2025).

Sensory processing sits right in the middle of this pattern. A lot of women who eventually get diagnosed with ADHD as adults describe a lifetime of being told they were reacting "too much" to things other people seemed to barely notice, such as tags, fluorescent lights, certain fabrics, background noise in a restaurant, or a particular tone of voice. Framed only through a behavioral lens, that reads as oversensitivity or anxiety. A 2021 consensus statement from the UK's national adult ADHD network, developed by occupational therapists and ADHD specialists together, laid out a framework for what OT can specifically offer adults with ADHD, distinct from the medication and talk-therapy approaches that dominate most treatment plans. Their recommendations center on helping adults recognize the relationship between their mood, their performance, and their sensory environment, then building real skill in monitoring and regulating the sensory input reaching their nervous system (Adamou et al., 2021).

A specific, individual profile instead of a generic label."You have ADHD" doesn't tell you whether loud environments are the thing quietly draining your capacity every day, or whether it's actually understimulation and a craving for more input that's driving your restlessness. Standardized sensory assessment tools identify your specific pattern (sensory seeking, sensory avoiding, low registration, sensory sensitivity) across each sensory domain, not just a general "you're sensitive" conclusion.

Language for things you've likely never had words for. Many adults come into a sensory evaluation having spent years managing sensory overwhelm without ever having a framework to understand it, let alone explain it to a partner, employer, or doctor. A written sensory profile gives you exactly that.

They found statistically significant improvements in perceived stress, ADHD symptoms, and satisfaction with daily roles and activities (Gutman et al., 2020). It's a small study (23 participants), but it's a concrete illustration of what tailored, sensory-informed OT can offer beyond medication and talk therapy alone.

A randomized controlled trial published in early 2026, for example, found meaningful improvements in sensorimotor function, attention, executive functioning, and emotional regulation in children with ADHD who received occupational therapy grounded in Ayres Sensory Integration principles (Kaplan Kılıç et al., 2026). That evidence base doesn't transfer over to adults automatically, as bodies and lives look different at 35 than they do at 8, but it does reflect a field that's taking the sensory-ADHD connection seriously at every age, with adult-specific research actively catching up.
